What is the take-home salary calculator?
A take-home salary calculator estimates the money that actually reaches your bank account after deductions are subtracted from your gross pay. Gross pay is the headline figure in a job offer; net pay is what you can budget with. Because tax systems vary by country, this tool uses a flexible model where you enter your own effective tax rate and fixed deductions, making it usable anywhere rather than being locked to one jurisdiction.
How it works
The calculator starts from your gross annual salary. It first subtracts any pre-tax deductions (for example a pension or retirement contribution entered as a percentage). It then applies your effective income-tax rate to the taxable remainder, and finally subtracts any fixed periodic deductions such as insurance. The result is divided by the chosen pay frequency (annual, monthly, biweekly or weekly) to show net pay per period. Because it separates percentage-based and fixed deductions, you can model most payslip structures.
Worked example
Imagine a gross salary of 60,000 per year, a 5% pension contribution, an effective tax rate of 20%, and 1,200 per year of fixed insurance. The pension removes 3,000, leaving 57,000 taxable. Tax of 20% is 11,400, leaving 45,600. Subtracting 1,200 insurance gives 44,400 net per year, or about 3,700 per month. Adjusting any input updates the monthly figure immediately so you can compare offers.
Frequently asked questions
Which country's tax rules does this use?
None specifically. You enter your own effective tax rate and deductions, so the tool works for any country. For exact figures, use your local tax tables.
What is an 'effective' tax rate?
It is the average percentage of your income paid in tax, not the top marginal bracket. It already blends the lower and higher bands into one number.
Are pension contributions pre-tax?
In this model, the percentage pension deduction is applied before tax, which matches many workplace pension schemes. Adjust the rate if yours differs.
Does it include employer contributions or bonuses?
No. Enter only your own gross pay. Add bonuses to the gross figure if you want an annualised estimate that includes them.
Is my salary information private?
Yes. Everything is calculated in your browser and never transmitted or saved anywhere.
