What is the unit converter?

A unit converter translates a measurement from one unit into another — metres to feet, kilograms to pounds, Celsius to Fahrenheit and many more. It removes the mental arithmetic and error-prone lookup tables from everyday tasks like following a recipe, reading a foreign spec sheet, or planning travel in a country that uses a different measurement system.

How it works

For most quantities the tool stores a fixed conversion factor relative to a base unit within each category (for example, metres for length or grams for weight). To convert, it multiplies your value by the source unit's factor to reach the base, then divides by the target unit's factor. Temperature is a special case because the scales have different zero points, so it uses explicit formulas — for instance °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 — rather than a single multiplier.

Worked example

To convert 10 kilometres to miles, the tool converts kilometres to the base unit metres (10 × 1000 = 10,000 m) and then to miles (10,000 ÷ 1609.344 ≈ 6.21 miles). For temperature, converting 25°C to Fahrenheit applies the formula 25 × 9/5 + 32 = 77°F. Change the input and the converted value updates instantly.
