What is the time zone converter?

A time zone converter takes a specific date and time in one place and tells you the matching local date and time somewhere else. It is the tool you reach for when scheduling a call across countries, catching a live stream, coordinating a release, or simply working out what time it is for a friend abroad. This converter uses the IANA time zone database built into your browser, so it understands real-world rules: standard time, daylight saving time (DST), historical changes and unusual offsets such as 30- or 45-minute zones. Everything runs locally on your device — no server, no tracking — and results update instantly as you type.

How it works

Every instant in time can be expressed as Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), the global reference clock. A time zone is defined by its offset from UTC — for example UTC+05:00 for Pakistan or UTC-05:00 for New York in winter. To convert, the tool first interprets your chosen date and time as a wall-clock reading in the source IANA zone (like Asia/Karachi), resolves it to a precise UTC instant using that zone's offset on that date, and then re-expresses that instant in each target zone. Because it uses IANA zones rather than fixed abbreviations, it applies the correct offset automatically — including whether DST is active on the date you picked. Abbreviations such as IST, CST or CDT are intentionally avoided as the source of truth because they are ambiguous: IST can mean India, Ireland or Israel time, and CST can mean US Central, China or Cuba. The converter also flags the two tricky DST edge cases: nonexistent 'spring forward' times that are skipped, and ambiguous 'fall back' times that occur twice.

Worked example

Suppose a meeting is set for 3:00 PM PKT (Asia/Karachi, UTC+05:00) on a June date. Pakistan does not observe daylight saving, so 3:00 PM PKT is 10:00 AM UTC. New York in June is on Eastern Daylight Time (UTC-04:00), so the same instant is 11:00 AM in New York — the same calendar day. London in June is on British Summer Time (UTC+01:00), making it 11:00 AM there too. Change the date to January and the offsets shift: New York moves to UTC-05:00 (EST) and London to UTC+00:00 (GMT), so 3:00 PM PKT becomes 5:00 AM in New York and 10:00 AM in London. The converter handles all of this automatically and shows the day difference when a conversion crosses midnight or the international date line.

Frequently asked questions

What is UTC?

UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the global time standard from which all time zones are offset. It does not change for daylight saving, which makes it a stable reference for converting between zones.

Does Pakistan observe daylight saving time?

No. Pakistan stays on Pakistan Standard Time (PKT, UTC+05:00) all year, so PKT conversions don't shift with the seasons — though the other zone in your conversion still might.

How do I convert PKT to EST?

Set the 'from' zone to Asia/Karachi and the 'to' zone to America/New_York. In winter New York is on EST (UTC-05:00), 10 hours behind PKT; in summer it's on EDT (UTC-04:00), 9 hours behind. The tool picks the right one for your date.

What is the difference between GMT and UTC?

In everyday use they are the same clock time. GMT is a time zone (used by the UK in winter), while UTC is a technical time standard. The UK switches to BST (UTC+01:00) in summer, but UTC never changes.

Why do some time zones have 30 or 45 minute offsets?

A few regions chose offsets that aren't whole hours for geographic or historical reasons — India is UTC+05:30, and Nepal is UTC+05:45. The converter supports these fractional offsets correctly.

How do I schedule a meeting across time zones?

Enter the proposed date and time in your own zone, then add each participant's zone as a target. Use the shareable link to send everyone the same conversion, and watch for any 'next day' or 'previous day' notes.
